Introduction to Tae kwon-do

Introduction
Welcome to Bernards Institute Tae kwon-do. I am glad you found us.

We specialise in teaching both male and female tiny tots (age 4 to 6 years), children (7 to 13 years) and (14 years to Adults).

Tae kwon-do is not just about fighting or self-defence although that is the overall aim. Tae kwon-do is a art with many facets. Tae kwon-do was initially taught to the Korean army hence the discipline, concentration and respect factors. Tae kwon-do is built on number of fundamental movements which when put together and performed continuously, involve a high-degree of co-ordination and fitness. When these movement are performed slowly they develop overall body strength and improve muscle tone. Couple these movements with breathing techniques and watch your overall power increase. This leads to a feeling of well being and confidence in yourself and your own abilities so allowing you to do whatever you want to do and achieve whatever you want to achieve!

History
Tae kwon-do literally translated means the art of hand and foot techniques. It was developed by Korea's General Choi Hong Hi in 1945 whilst he was locked up inside a Japanese training camp during Koreas struggle with Japan. It was officially recognised on the 11th April 1955 and is now practised in over 100 different countries.

Tae kwon-do combines the korean art of Kyon with the Japanese art of karate and the application of modern science to develop a powerful self-defence tool.
