Notes : Salsa is based on 8 beats ie 8 beats to the bar. Normally we dance on beats 1,2,3 & 5,6,7 pausing on beats 4 & 8.
BEGINNERS
Salsa Steps Body weight should be on appropriate leg on beats 1,2,3 & 4,5,6 ie beats 1/3/6= left, 2/5/7= right. Pause on 4 & 8
Marching on the spot Left right left. Right left right.
Mambo
Move left leg forward with weight. Move weight backward onto right leg. Then
move left leg back to original position.
Move right leg backward with weight. Move weight forward onto left leg. Then
move right leg back to original position
Side step
Move left leg sideward with weight. Move weight sideward onto right leg. Then
move left leg back to original position.
Move right leg sideward with weight. Move weight sideward onto left leg. Then
move right leg back to original position
Back step Move left leg backward with weight. Move weight backward onto right leg. Then
move left leg back to original position.
Move right leg backward with weight. Move weight forward onto left leg. Then
move right leg back to original position
Open step
Move left leg back & side with weight. Move weight forward onto right leg. Move
left leg back to original position.
Move right leg back & side with weight. Move weight forward onto left leg. Move
right leg back to original position
Uptown Downtown
Move to right for 7 beats (counts) whilst performing
Cross left over right with weight on left on beat 1, then transfer weight to
right then back to left, to right then
back to left, to right then back to left.
Move to left for 7 beats (counts) whilst performing
Cross right over left with weight on right on beat 1, then transfer weight to
left then back to right, to left then back to
right, to left then back to right
Suzie Q
Cross left over right with weight on left, then transfer weight on right then
back to left.
Cross right over left with weight on right, then transfer weight on left then
back to right.
Chord
Cross left over right with weight on left on 1. Cross right over left with
weight on right on 3.
Cross left over right with weight on left on 5. Cross right over left with
weight on right on 7.
Turns
Slow walk-around Turning 90 degrees on every 3 beats. Hence 2 bars required to perform a full turn to left or right
Walk around Turning 180 degrees on every 3 beats. Hence 1 bar required to perform a full turn to left or right
Half left turn
Turning on beat 2 180 degrees to left on right foot landing on 3 with weight on
left foot. Move right foot
forward landing on beat 5. Pivot on both feet to face front on 6.
Bring right foot back to left on 7.
Half right turn Turning on beat 2 180 degrees to right on right foot landing on 3 with weight on left foot. Pivot on both feet to face front on 6. Move left foot to right foot. Change weight to right foot on 7.
Right Turn
Full turn clockwise on beat 2, pivoting on right foot landing on left foot on 3.

Routine 2
Combination half left turn, half right turn, side step 16 beats, pachanga taps
16 beats, on the spot 16 beats lifting hip
upon beat 4 & 8. Slow right walk-around turn. Slow left walk-around turn. Mambo

Heel heel toe toe Pivoting on heels and toes alternatively on every beat
Front double cross
Cross left foot over right on 1, moving it across to the left on 2 and back on
3. Cross right foot over left on 5
moving it across to the right on 6 and back on 7
V basic
On 5 turn to make left side of V. Mambo on this line until next beat 5. Make
right side of V on beat 5. Mambo on this
line until next beat 5. On beat 5 turn to front and mambo.
Suzie Q Plus
Suzi Q, Suzi, Suzi Q , Plus, Suzi Q.
1/2/3 , 5/6/7/8/1 , 3 ,

Transition step Changes timing of beat1 to start on left leg or right leg. Mambo. Repeat movement on beats 5,6,7 in succession.
Side Taps
Beats 1 & 2 move left foot to left, then right foot to left with a tap. Beats 3
& 4 move right foot to right, then left foot to
right with a tap. Beats 5/6/7 & 8 move left foot to left, right foot to left,
left foot to left, right foot to left ending with a tap.
Repeat the above moving to the right. To achieve this replace left with right in the above.
Follower cross body
Follower starts mambo on 1 moving backwards. On 3 right foot should be in front
of left. Step forwards on next 2 beats
On beat 6 half turn anti-clockwise. On 7 weight on left foot ready to mambo on 1
with right foot.
Lead cross body
Lead starts mambo moving forwards on 1, then forwards and to the side on 2
and turning left on 3. Then moves back
on 5, forwards & turning left on 6 then moving right leg to left on 7. Lead ends
up facing in opposite direction to which
they started.
Combinations based on Level 3 & Level 4
Note 1*8 = 1 bar ie 8 beats.
2*8 = 2 bars ie 16 beats
Routine 3
Improver
- Side taps 2 * 8. Front double cross 1*8. Heel heel toe toe 1*8. Front double cross 1*8.
- Heel heel toe toe 1*8. V basic 2*8. Suzie Q Plus 2*8. Mambo 1*8. Transition step 1* 8.
- Follower cross body ½ turn anti-clockwise 1*8. Mambo on beats 1 to 3.
- Half right turn 1* 8. Mambo5/6/7. Follower cross body ½ turn anti-clockwise 1*8.
- Mambo on beats 1 to 3.
- Half right turn 1*8.. Mambo 5/6/7 + 1* 8. Transition step. Side steps 2 * 8.
- Side step ½ right turning on 2. Side step for next 8 beats.
Side step ½ left turn on 6. Side step right turn on 2 followed by side step left turn on 6.
Intermediate
As above adding taps/flicks on beats 4 and 8 plus performing 1.5 turn on cross body.
